As the holiday season had approached, students at Bridgewater-Raritan High School came together on Wednesday, December 17 for the Habitat for Humanity club’s gingerbread house building event.
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit that promotes sustainable housing and helps in building and renovating houses for those in need.
Sia Agarwala, the president of the Habitat for Humanity club at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, shared the aim for the club.
“At Bridgewater-Raritan High School, we mainly fundraise and help spread Habitat’s message, whether that is explaining what Habitat for Humanity is or how they can help.”
Attendees of the gingerbread house building event clustered into small groups, working together to build and decorate their equally unique gingerbread houses.
Students exhibited their creativity in creating their gingerbread houses, collaborating with each other to decorate their houses with icing and different candies.
Amidst the festivities, junior Ridhwan Sharma delivered a presentation, instructing students on ways they can get more involved and receive volunteer hours from Habitat for Humanity.
Additionally, more information was given regarding the next meeting in early January, during which a poster-making event for Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore donation center will be taking place.
Sia Agarwala expressed her intentions behind holding this event for her club members.
“We wanted to hold this event to get to know more of our members and help them get to know each other as well. Also, we thought it would be a festive and relaxed setting with winter break coming up,” she said.
Although the event was much more relaxed than expected, Sia Agarwala had only positive thoughts in hindsight.
“Towards the end, people started to have more fun, especially since we were in a time crunch. The pressure combined with the difficulty of making a gingerbread house actually made the environment more relaxed, since people were just trying their best at that point,” Agarwala reflected.
