The Quill & Scroll Journalism Honor Society chapter of Bridgewater-Raritan High School, associated with The Prowler, inducted 14 members on Wednesday, May 13, as part of its second annual honor society induction.
The Quill & Scroll Journalism Honor Society is an international honor society established in 1926 at the University of Iowa by a group of journalism educators who wanted to highlight the accomplishments of student journalists.
Today, the Quill & Scroll Journalism Honor Society stands as a recognition of devoted high school journalists who continue to impress with their work.
The ceremony took place in the high school auditorium right after school was dismissed, and family, friends, peers, and members of the Bridgewater-Raritan faculty all showed up to support the student journalists. Included in the audience was Dr. Kathy Messano, a high school English Arts Teacher whose classroom, No. 515, is used as the site for the weekly Prowler meetings.
The Prowler Advisors, Bruce Moran and Victor Smoke, led the ceremony’s remarks, officially anointing the students as official members of the honor society.

Mr. Moran, the Communications Coordinator for the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District, spoke on the induction ceremony as a whole.
“I stood there on the stage during the ceremony with pride and admiration for these students who have demonstrated the ideals that the Quill & Scroll promotes,” Mr. Moran revealed. “They will forever be members of a long-standing, class society such as Quill & Scroll.”
Mr. Smoke, a Social Studies/BRITE staff member at the high school, discussed what the distinction means.
” I thought the ceremony went well. It was our second yearly induction, and we had a much larger group of inductees,” Mr. Smoke explained. These students are all such high performers, both academically and with their extracurricular activities. We are constantly looking for ways to honor them and highlight their contributions and accomplishments. Our aim as advisors is to improve the ceremony every year.”
The Prowler congratulates all of its students on their distinctions for excellence in high school journalism and looks forward to making the ceremony an annual tradition to recognize rising stars of the writing and editorial staff.
“Well done. We tip our caps to you all,” Mr. Moran directed to the new members of the Quill & Scroll.
