Not sure which elective to take next at Bridgewater-Raritan High School?
Many current students in journalism would recommend this course to their friends.
Students in all grades are welcome to enroll in this half-year course, which is open to all students and has no prerequisites.
Dr. Kathalyn Messano, the journalism teacher for this semester, described the class as “a great elective for students who enjoy writing.”
She explained.
“We go over different types of journalistic forms, and a lot of the course is self-selected in terms of what students write about. Students can also collaborate on articles. Having so much choice helps create a relaxed environment.”
Many other students agree that this journalism course not only provides them with a relaxing outlet to write and learn about the community, but also pushes their writing skills and abilities as writers and students.
“I chose this class because writing helps me express my feelings and also helps me stay connected in the community,” current journalism student and freshman Nishtha Bhatt said.
Students have also been able to learn skills they can take outside of the journalism classroom.
“This class helped me understand that research is always an important part of the text or piece you’re writing about. Another skill I improved was time management, which is required by a writer to be able to turn in articles on time so they correspond with the events you’re writing about,” Bhatt said.
This class helps students meet new people, as it is made up of students from every grade who are able to collaborate on articles. For writers looking to be published, students have the opportunity to submit their work to BRHS’s school newspaper, The Prowler.
