With the start of the new school year came many changes: the new block scheduling, new courses, new teachers, and a new principal,. Daniel Hemberger. The Prowler wanted to take a look at his experiences leading up to BRHS.

Q: What motivated you to pursue this career as a principal?

A: I enjoyed teaching. I was in the classroom for about 12 years – I had been a coach, advisor, and English teacher, and I guess I always say that ‘leaders lead’. Since I had been doing well as a teacher, I wanted to lead. I had the desire to take on a bigger role.

Q: What would you recommend for those who aspire to work in education?

A: I would recommend that teachers, in particular, have to understand that schools are about teaching kids first, and content second… It’s important to know that this profession is really about building relationships with the kids.

Q: What inspired you to come here to BRHS? How are you finding it, the teachers and students, and your job?

A: I was motivated because of two things. First, I had been principal previously [in a smaller school]… and I was motivated to have a bigger challenge. The other part is that the year prior to coming here, I became an assistant superintendent. That job was really different. I was not really interacting with students as much… So, it was my desire to continue being a principal in a more challenging environment.

What influenced you and the rest of the administration to make the scheduling changes?

Q: I think there’s a lot of research between making that transition. The rotating blocks create variety, which naturally improves attendance. Having a longer block… is better for going deeper into content… having fewer transitions in the day is really important for creating a calmer experience… And then there’s the unit lunch too. Everyone can do what they have to do… In the past, you’d also find students who didn’t have friends in their period. So, you don’t have that problem anymore!

Q: What do you like to do in your free time? What are your plans for this Thanksgiving break?

A: I don’t really have any big plans, but it will be nice to just stay home for a few days since it’s been pretty busy the last few weeks… I do like biking though, I’m a cycler. I also play music a little bit… guitar and banjo. So, it’ll be fun – an enjoyable experience!

The Prowler thanks Principal Hemberger for his thoughtful answers and congratulates him for his new position.
