Mathematics at Bridgewater-Raritan High School is taking on a fresh identity with the launch of the Mu Alpha Theta Honors Society.
Founded and led by junior Ryan Li, this club aims to break stereotypes that math is a tedious subject filled with tests and equations.
During the first meeting, which took place on February 19 in room 2011, students were introduced to the core values and the structure of the club. The meeting, with around twenty members in attendance, consisted of an engaging presentation outlining the club’s mission, officer roles and future planned activities.

The club’s purpose, as explained earlier, is to foster a deeper admiration of mathematics beyond just tests and formulas. Members interested in leadership positions were informed of the application process, which includes taking an examination scheduled for this month.
President Ryan Li provided his motivation for establishing the honor society at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
“ I wanted to revitalize the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society and approach the content in a way that would be different from other Honor Societies. I wanted to have a space where we could explore the weird, fun and even ridiculous side of math, whether cracking competition problems, debating the best way to slice a pizza mathematically, or just appreciating how wild numbers can be,” he said.
Additionally, members were introduced to the grading system and the topics that were going to be covered during the year, ranging from linear algebra to graph theory. The meeting also outlined an exciting lineup of future events, including a Pi Day celebration, bake sales and integration bees.
The first meeting set the tone for a vibrant and exciting year ahead with a combination of challenging topics, fun activities and support.
