The Bridgewater-Raritan High School Model United Nations club served as the host to its seventh annual Model United Nations conference on January 25.
More than a hundred students across New Jersey and Pennsylvania attended the conference, displaying their public speaking and leadership skills while discussing some of the most pressing issues across the globe.
Delegates were assigned to one of the seven committees offered: SOCHUM, DISEC, SPECPOL, UNHCR, WHO, UNECE and a Crisis focused on the fictional Avatar series. After choosing the agenda to discuss, delegates began to debate possible resolutions, presented their country’s stances and worked with each other to formulate a detailed resolution paper that would resolve the issue.
Each committee was led by a chair, co-chair and a page chosen to learn from the chairs; all were Bridgewater-Raritan High School students. Together, each committee’s chairs created a detailed background guide after months of research. Chairs also regulated the debate occurring in the room to make the committee sessions fun and fair for all delegates.
UNECE was chaired by senior Harsha Ahmed, SPECPOL by senior Isabel Lu, WHO by senior Lily Xu, DISEC by senior Darsh Srivastava, SOCHUM by junior Ananya Gupta, Crisis by senior Riya Shenvi and WHO by senior Meriam Stroock.

UNECE chair and Bridgewater-Raritan Model UN club president Harsha Ahmed reflected on his experience.
“Chairing has always given me the great opportunity to see the next generation of MUNners grow and work towards solving the world’s problems. I’m honored to have this opportunity and I enjoyed my last BRMUNC,” Ahmed said.
Delegates had an amazing experience at the conference as well. Mayra Rajput from J.P. Stevens, who won Honorable Delegate for her representation of Italy, noted the balanced nature of the conference.
“At BRMUNC, everyone bonded incredibly well, had a great time, and loved each other’s company, unlike at conferences where everyone usually battles for survival,” Rajput said.
As the club hosted another successful conference, it looks forward to attending the upcoming conferences, including the tri-state’s Academy Model UN and the National High School Model UN Conference (NHSMUN), the largest conference in the world.
