As many may have heard, being accepted into Rutgers University has become increasingly difficult over the past few years. With a declining acceptance rate, the state’s largest public university which is known for being a “safety school” for many New Jersey high school students is becoming profoundly selective. As more and more students apply to Rutgers and admission standards rise, high school students must strengthen their applications and work harder to stand out during the admissions process.
Rutgers’ Selectivity
In recent years, Rutgers University has seen a surge in applications, largely due to its move from its own application portal to the Common Application. Thereby, making it easier for students to apply, especially from out of state. As many applying seniors have become aware, Rutgers’ number of applications has increased by 90 percent in just two years. Factors such as increased interest from out-of-state students, limited campus housing, no supplemental essays and efforts to enhance the university’s profile have forced Rutgers’ acceptance rate to fall.
A senior who applied to Rutgers and requested to stay anonymous shared their thoughts on Rutgers’ increasing selectivity.
“With Rutgers becoming more selective, getting admitted has become more competitive. However, I think that during the admissions process, I was able to rise to the challenge and show Rutgers my individuality by being original in my essay and joining a lot of clubs that I can relate to,” they said.
A Wake Up Call For High School Students
For students hoping to attend Rutgers, strong grades alone may no longer be enough to be selected. While maintaining a superior GPA is essential, Rutgers admissions officers are looking beyond academics. Items such as extracurriculars, leadership experience and internships are gaining more weight in the admissions process; students must find ways to set themselves apart.
Improving Chances
Students aiming for Rutgers should maintain a high academic and extracurricular profile. Taking multiple rigorous courses, such as AP or Honors classes, demonstrate a student’s academic ambition to colleges.
Beyond the classroom, involvement in sports, clubs and community service expresses dedication and leadership. Holding leadership positions in clubs/activities and committing to activities for multiple years indicates a student’s passion for a particular subject, perseverance and responsibility—items that Rutgers looks for in its applicants.
An engaging and compelling personal essay is also essential, as it is a way for students to express their individuality and share their aspirations. With Rutgers’ increasing selectivity, applicants should avoid simply listing accomplishments and focus on personal growth, challenges in their life, and what they can contribute to Rutgers to set themselves apart from the competitive crowd.
Building strong relationships with teachers is also crucial, as letters of recommendation can provide key insight into a student’s work ethic, personal character and potential for growth.
Looking Ahead
Evidently, as Rutgers continues to raise the bar, students will need to put in the effort to make their applications stand out. For high school students hoping to call Rutgers their home next year, it is imperative that they dedicate themselves, get involved, strive for excellence and be ready to prove why they should be accepted into the competitive upcoming class.
