On January 23, 2025, select Bridgewater Raritan High School students participated in the first exam of the New Jersey Science League (NJSL).
The NJSL allows students to engage in rigorous scientific examinations across multiple subjects, including Biology I, Biology II, Chemistry I, Chemistry II and Physics I, among others.
The competition consists of four regional meets, held on January 23, February 20, March 20 and April 24. Schools competing across New Jersey assign students to teams based on their current science courses. The exams are 50 minutes long and are administered online during the designated competition period.
Students who compete in at least three of four tests and rank among the top six scorers on their respective teams receive a certificate. Among those, the top 10% of all students who receive certificates will also receive a plaque. Schools are ranked based on the combined scores of their two top-scoring students per month in each division, and the top 10 teams in each subject receiving plaques.
Last year, over half of the team earned a certificate for attending three out of four competitions, with a majority of the remainder earning one for 100% attendance. Additionally, the Biology II Team, which consists of students currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Biology, placed 2nd state-wide and earned plaques for their achievement, along with a plaque for the team.
When asked about the first exam, freshman Jay Fang, who is participating in Biology I gave his comments. “It’s great and uplifting to see so many talented students competing too. They’re great role models, and I’m sure we all wish to emulate them,” he said.
BRHS Science League members continue to study for the February 20 examination, eager to build off on their promising start. Beyond the competition, NJSL offers the opportunity to build quintessential scientific foundations and prepares students with knowledge in the field.
