In a display of creativity and compassion, Bridgewater-Raritan High School students have launched a new club dedicated to spreading joy to senior citizens.
The club, Sending Sunshine, was brought about by sophomores Sri Kakarla and Prakhya Bavanari in an attempt to brighten the lives of elderly citizens. Supervised by Kristen Vogel, they are dedicated to sending senior centers personalized cards to make small changes in the community.
One of the club’s founders, Sri Kakarla shared the inspiration behind the initiative. “We wanted to create something simple but meaningful to benefit our community,” she said. Their goal was to bring their ideas of sending cards as a way to spread awareness and happiness and they hope to make a lasting impact through a small idea, fostering a culture of compassion and service.
The club held its first meeting on December 4, where students gathered to learn about its mission and view sample card designs. The first meeting served as an introduction to the club’s purpose and goals. Students were encouraged to apply for officer positions to gain more volunteer experience and exhibit leadership. Positions such as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer were discussed and explained during the meeting. Students were then invited to apply and submit their interest form within the next few months.
In the future, Sending Sunshine hopes to elect officers and send their first cards to senior centers. Once the officer team is decided, the club will design cards, including drawings, messages of encouragement and colorful decorations. Interested students are encouraged to attend the next meeting, where the election process will continue, and the card-making process will begin.
