Monday, November 25, marked a momentous occasion at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
On that day, Bridgewater-Raritan High School held its first-ever Quill and Scroll induction ceremony.
“The Quill and Scroll is a prestigious and world-renowned honor society to recognize high school journalism students,” said Bruce Moran, the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District’s Communications Specialist who is the Co-Club Advisor for The Prowler, the high school’s student newspaper.
According to the statement from the organization, Quill and Scroll is the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists that was founded at the University of Iowa on April 10, 1926, by a group of teachers of journalism who wanted to recognize and reward worthy high school journalists.
The Quill signifies the meticulous care required to turn thoughts into proper journalism, and the Scroll represents the permanent quality of good journalism.
After working diligently on The Prowler through their high school years, Co-Editors-in-Chiefs Isabel Lu and Paritosh Bhole achieved a charter for their dedication and were successfully inducted into the society by Mr. Moran and the co-advisor, Victor Smoke.
The Prowler acts as the student news site of the school, featuring articles on band concerts, new clubs, sports games and more. Lu and Bhole hope that the distinction of this honors society will bring many more opportunities to the club writers, editors, and staff members.
The ceremony was held in the auditorium during unit lunch, inviting all club members to come and watch as the advisors, Mr. Moran and Mr. Smoke, introduced Lu and Bhole. “Re-launching the Bridgewater-Raritan chapter of the Quill and Scroll was a great pleasure. Our Chief-Editors being our inaugural inductees have set a high standard that I am confident will be met by our junior editors and writing staff,” said Mr. Smoke.
The ceremony attracted such officials as Bridgewater-Raritan High School Principal Dan Hemberger and Barry Walker, the President of the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Board of Education.
As the year continues, the advisors hope to welcome inductees in batches for future ceremonies. They plan to review applicants and accept the most dedicated first, keeping an eye on attendance, article count, academic standing and demonstrated interest.
Following the ceremony, new inductees will receive a badge to forever remember the efforts of ancient scribes who painstakingly recorded the events of their time in permanent form, symbolizing the beginning of journalism.
Lu and Bhole are excited to give this opportunity to club members and see how it will help the Prowler grow.
