The Fall blood drive at Bridgewater-Raritan High School was a voluntary donation service aiming to collect blood for individuals in need of medical assistance. Held on November 13 and led by Mr. Greg Filipski and a dedicated team of advisors, the event provided students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while assisting donors.
This initiative was more than just a community service—it was an immersive learning experience. Students signed up to volunteer and were tasked with assisting blood donors, especially those experiencing symptoms like dizziness or fatigue, ensuring their well-being by monitoring vital signs such as blood pressure and sugar levels.
Maanvita Konka attended the event as a volunteer. She stated that the volunteers gave, “company while [the patients] were cleared to leave,” fostering a sense of care and connection.
This experience was particularly beneficial for students considering careers in healthcare. By engaging in real-world patient care, they got a glimpse into the responsibilities of medical professionals, which can bolster their confidence and interest in pursuing such paths in the future.
Beyond technical knowledge, the event also helped students develop other essential skills. Communicating with donors, providing reassurance, and collaborating with peers during the event enhanced their interpersonal abilities. These skills are not only critical in medical fields but are also highly valued in any career.
For aspiring medical students, the Fall Blood Drive provided an early introduction to healthcare practices. Gaining this kind of practical exposure can strengthen college applications by showcasing a commitment to learning and community service. Moreover, these experiences can help students stand out when applying to internships, scholarships, or pre-med programs by demonstrating their proactive approach to gaining relevant experience.
At its core, the Fall Blood Drive was about giving back to the community. It allowed students to contribute meaningfully while learning about the importance of blood donation in saving lives. This dual benefit—helping others and enriching personal growth—highlighted the drive as a powerful tool for fostering a spirit of service and compassion.
