The Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s Model United Nations (BRMUN) chapter held a successful Parents Night on October 18, welcoming families and introducing them to the world of Model UN.
The event showcased an informative slideshow detailing BRMUN’s mission, benefits, and upcoming events for the 2024-2025 academic year. This evening provided parents with a comprehensive overview of what Model UN entails, including the processes students undergo to simulate United Nations procedures by representing countries and debating critical global issues.
The slideshow emphasized the educational and personal growth opportunities that Model UN offers, highlighting skills such as public speaking, leadership, international relations, diplomacy and negotiation. Parents learned how these skills are fostered in BRMUN meetings, which include training sessions on parliamentary procedures, position and resolution papers and strategies for both moderated and unmoderated caucuses.
Additionally, the presentation outlined the exciting line-up of conferences BRMUN members can attend, including the Bridgewater-Raritan Model United Nations Conference (BRMUNC) in January, the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) in February and the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) in March.
Sophomore Shanaya Keote shared her thoughts. “I am looking forward to the amazing opportunities coming up, and I can’t wait to get some firsthand experiences at conferences,” she said.
Throughout the night, parents were engaged and asked numerous questions, which the chapter’s officers addressed enthusiastically. The evening concluded with a dinner, offering an informal setting for parents to connect with the officers and each other, further strengthening the community surrounding BRMUN.
