The Raritan Headwaters Club at Bridgewater-Raritan High School is affiliated with the Raritan Headwaters Association in Far Hills, New Jersey. The club’s first meeting was held during lunch on September 23 in room 1013.
Leaders of the club started off the meeting with a presentation about the club and upcoming events hosted by the club that are in need of volunteers.
The club’s goal is to make BRHS certified to the watershed level by spreading awareness about the cleanliness and restoration of the New Jersey waters.
Club co-president Bella Dimonte spoke on the club’s involvement in the community.
“To advocate for the environment, we work hands-on with the Raritan-Headwaters Association to make a difference in our local communities,” Dimonte said.
At the meeting, members of the club worked on an activity in which they created posters that shared ways on how one could preserve water. Each member was given instructions to research methods on how waterways all throughout the state of New Jersey could be saved.
Club leaders made sure that each poster was well-detailed and provided effective strategies on how water can be kept clean. Each poster was then hung up around the school for students to acknowledge and read.
On October 28, the club will be holding its first event of the year after school which is a bake sale. Members of the club who chose to volunteer for the bake sale will sell Halloween-themed desserts to students at the high school. The money earned from this bake sale will be going towards paying for the supplies needed for the annual Raritan Headwaters lantern walk.
The lantern walk is the most popular and beloved event by recent and past members of the club as it is an entertaining tradition continued by Raritan Headwaters to celebrate autumn at the end of the agricultural year and the beginning of the harvest.
Co-president Sophia Krause reflected on the lantern walk in previous years.
“Every year people of all ages have fun. Even volunteers have said they would buy their own tickets and go again,” Krause said.
This year, the lantern walk will be held in the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve on November 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a meeting in November for further discussion. Members of the club will have the choice to either volunteer for the event to gain volunteer hours or participate in it.
