The Bridgewater-Raritan Hackathon, or BRHacks, is to be held on October 12 at Bridgewater-Raritan High School (BRHS).
This event, running from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., will bring together young computer science enthusiasts from all over the state for a day of ideas, projects and fun.
As with any hackathon, students will be creating computer science projects, which can be both physical and virtual, primarily in teams. At the end of the day, a panel of judges with experience in the field will rank projects and determine awards, which include categories such as: Beginner, Environment, Women and Cybersecurity. There will also be an award for the best project overall. The prizes will include premium tech products, such as AirPod Pros, and Logitech mouses and headphones.
In between work for the main competition, attendees can attend several in-house workshops on various computer science topics, such as Python, HTML, CSS, data visualization, web development and one-on-one computer science competitions.
Additionally, the hackathon is collaborating with several school clubs to provide more specialized workshops. These clubs include T.E.S.T. Team 303 (robotics team), Girls Who Code, CyBR (cybersecurity), The Math and Physics Journal and BR Prints (3-D printing club).
Kush Dave, a freshman and a member of the BRHacks logistics team, looked forward to the event.
“[I am] incredibly excited to be a part of the event, especially because I attended the event last year and had a lot of fun!” he said.
Saanvi Goel, the director of the hackathon, gave her take on what to expect.
“[I hope the hackathon will] expand an appreciation for computer science, and cultivate talent among high schoolers interested in the field. It’s also intended to be super accessible to all students, being free to join,” she said.
All BRHS students with a passion for computer science, even if they’re beginners, are encouraged to sign up. To do so, they must join the CODE Club classroom with the code “uqms3hr” and fill out the form linked under the second announcement. The deadline to register for the Hackathon is midnight on October 9.
