The 80th Golden Globes were held on Jan. 10, 2023, and like every year, history was made.

The Telugu movie RRR won Best Foreign Film in the Critics’ Choice Awards, and one of its songs ‘Naatu Naatu’, won Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.

This is India’s first time winning a Golden Globe Award in its entire history. Interestingly, the song was filmed outside of Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine months before the Russia-Ukraine War began. President Zelensky was thrilled with the song’s success.

In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated them for winning the award.

“Prestigious honour has made every Indian very proud”.

A.R Rahman, an Indian music composer who has won several awards, including an Oscar, called the win a “paradigm hit”.

The movie was directed and written by SS Rajamouli and was released to U.S. theatres on March 24, 2022. The movie is a historical fantasy about two revolutionaries who fought against the British during the Indian Independence Movement from 1857 to 1947.

The movie was a massive hit at the box office, making around 1,200 crores, which is equivalent to 145 million U.S. dollars. The movie was not just a hit all over India, but it was a hit all over the world. The movie was released in five languages, Telugu (original language), Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. The Hindi version was ranked Top 10 most-watched titles in the US on the Netflix streaming platform.

The movie consisted of love ballads, dance numbers, and patriotic anthems. The four-minute ‘Naatu Naatu’ song has had thousands dancing to the beat as the energetic movements in the song promoted viral trends all over the media.

Choreographer Prem Rakshit claims that he composed 95 dance steps for the song, and it took 19 months for the final, polished result of the song to get released. The song was a mish-mash of several dance genres from old barn stomping to Bollywood (Hindi) and Tollywood (Telugu) movies.

The movie had two stars from the Telugu movie cinema, NTR Jr. and Ram Charan. Both actors’ families have been rivals for the last 30-35 years. NTR would respond to that with, “We are rivals, but we are friends too. So our rivalry is very positive.” After the RRR, their third film together, NTR believes “the whole scenario has changed” and he and Ram Charan are “best friends” now.

Song composer Keeravani said that he wanted a song and a movie that featured two megastars being friends, then fighting, then competing against each other, and ending up teaming up to take down the British. This formula instantly promoted the movie’s success.

Ram Charan’s father Chiranjeevi, one of the older but most popular Telugu actors called his son’s project a “phenomenal, historic win.” RRR was nominated for Best Non-English Language Film, however, it lost to Argentina, 1985.

It might not have won the Best Movie award, but it has won the attention of many people around the world. This is yet another historical moment for India and the beginning of Indian movies dominating the global film industry.
