A little kindness goes a long way – and it’s coming in the form of paper, artwork, and heartfelt messages here at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
The Sending Sunshine club at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, which held its first meeting of the year on September 25, is a club dedicated to brightening the days of seniors in local care homes by creating handmade greeting cards filled with words of encouragement and kindness. In turn, students who helped create greeting cards received volunteer hours for the cards created.
Club officer and junior Prakhya Bavanari spoke about the club’s mission.
“It’s not just about the volunteer hours, but about spreading kindness to our senior community,” Bavanari said.
During their first meeting, students were introduced to the club’s mission, guidelines for creating cards and the volunteer hour format. Officers Prakhya Bavanari and Sri Kakarla, both juniors, explained that with each card a member creates, they will receive half an hour of volunteer time. They also discussed how the club serves as a way to serve our community as well as gain valuable volunteer hours for those unable to volunteer off-campus.

The officers then went over officer positions, such as card checker, social media coordinator, outreach and more. Available officer positions include: secretary and social media manager. The officers highly encourage any interested members to sign up for available positions.
After the introduction of the club, members got to work on designing their cards, using supplies such as markers and colored pencils–all provided for by the club–creating cards of compassion and optimism.
The Sending Sunshine Club meets in Room 2001 during Unit Lunch. If interested in joining, students can reach out to the club’s advisor, Mrs. Kristen Vogel, or to Sri Kakarla and Prakhya Bavanari. Students may also join the Google Classroom with the code: fvhwrmz.
