Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s clubs and activities allow students to do good in their community and make a righteous change. Cancer Kids First (CKF) is the world’s largest youth-led pediatric cancer nonprofit; a large number of schools all around the world have made and participated in a chapter of the organization. One of these chapters lives at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
The club’s general meetings are held usually every month on Tuesdays in Room 2021 during the first half of lunch. Recently, our high school’s chapter Cancer Kids First had their second meeting of the year on January 2.
At the meeting, the focus was discussing each club officer’s role in the organization. Officers included: sophomore Sophia Kelleher, vice-president; sophomore Dhiya Selvakumar, secretary; sophomore Meher Dua, treasurer; sophomores Austin L and Rebecca Ribeiro, social media coordinators; and junior Kayla Gsell, outreach coordinator.
Juniors Grant Dequina and Andrew Gerrard, the club’s co-presidents, announced the results of the three committees the club offers. The select committees included the Fundraising, Advertising & Brand and Program Initiation sectors; these are helpful to the structuring of the club.
Committee members can get to know each other and work together as a team for the club’s through meetings hosted regularly every month.
The current objective of the club is to brighten up the days of pediatric cancer patients through different outreach programs such as letters, care packages and patient interaction. These activities are supported by fundraisers such as bake sales and fun events.
Co-president Grant Dequina provided his perspective on the club.
“My personal opinion of the club is that CKF is a great way for members of the BRHS community to support pediatric cancer patients in a very fun and fulfilling way! People should join because we offer new and interesting ways to make a difference in people’s lives and for those who would like to level-up their club management skills as we offer many club leadership opportunities,” he said.
The dedication put into this chapter demonstrates how strong of a community Bridgewater-Raritan High School has, especially when coming together for an important cause. More information about Cancer Kids First can be found at cancerkidsfirst.org.
