The Bridgewater-Raritan High School was the host to 85 talented eighth grade musicians on Friday, January 31.
Each student will be bringing their years of dedication and passion for music to the high school’s auditorium this fall.
Since picking up their instruments in fifth grade, these students have honed their skills, forever anticipating the day they could take a step into the high school orchestral experience. Their long-awaited visit was more than just a glimpse into their future—it was a symphony of excitement, ambition and dedication.
Upon arriving at the high school, the eighth graders were welcomed with a brief introduction of the high school music program in the auditorium. Following this, high school orchestra class officers led them on a guided tour of the 100 building’s music wing, giving them a glimpse of the environment they may soon call home.
The visiting students then took the stage to perform the pieces they diligently prepared. Their efforts were met with enthusiastic applause and followed by the Concert Orchestra’s captivating performance of New World Symphony and My Shot from Hamilton. The Symphony Orchestra played Shostakovich No. 5 next, leaving the young musicians inspired.

The highlight of the day arrived when the high school orchestra joined the eighth grade orchestra in their combined performance of In Winter.
During this experience, high schoolers provided valuable tips and critiques to their future peers, helping them refine their technique. Meanwhile, eighth graders had the opportunity to observe and learn firsthand from Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s experienced players.
As the visit concluded, students engaged in a Q&A session led by the high school orchestra officers, offering a deeper understanding of what to expect from the music program in the coming years. After enjoying a well-earned pizza lunch, the eighth graders departed, taking with them a renewed enthusiasm for their musical journey at the high school.
The Middle School Eighth Grade Orchestra Director, Catherine Butler, reflected on this experience, highlighting its significance in preparing students for the rigorous high school orchestra program.
“This was a great chance for them to see what it’s like in orchestra at the high school level, and get to meet new friends! I am hopeful that the students will be inspired by the repertoire and the high school students in general to pursue orchestra at the high school level. Getting to know the students and listen to them play is a huge part of helping the students get excited to join the orchestra program and I think this day is the perfect example of that,” she said.
Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s Ninth Grade, Concert and Symphony Orchestras truly hope that the eighth graders had a meaningful and enjoyable experience, taking away valuable lessons and inspiration. The orchestra department looks forward to welcoming them into the high school and seeing them grow as musicians next year.
