John Basilone was a hero who fought in World War II, winning a Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.

The Borough of Raritan has honored him in more ways than one. The Somerset County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved that every intersection on the main street (Somerset Street) from Thompson to the John Basilone statue has been ceremoniously named Basilone Boulevard.

At the ceremony to commemorate the honorary rename, the borough’s council was joined by the Somerset County Board of Commissioners Deputy Director Melonie Marano, Raritan Mayor Zachary Bray, and Basilone’s family member Kim Van Note. At the ceremony, Bray thanked the County of Somerset while Marano led the effort to have this renaming take place.

This idea of a name change was introduced to the board members by Raritan resident and former marine Adam Armahizer. His idea seemed almost obvious because of Basilone’s heroics and was endorsed by Raritan’s council. This special announcement was perfectly timed for the John Basilone parade, which took place on Sept. 18, 2022.

Mayor Bray was present at the unveiling, where he mentioned that “the atmosphere was really great!” He went on to speak about how it was great due to what was happening, but also because of descendants of John Basilone being present.

Additionally, Mayor Bray states that renaming “is a wonderful idea because it is super important to never let the memories of heroes from the past die.”

Overall, this ceremonious rename of Thompson Street for the late hero, John Basilone, is a message that it is crucial to uphold the legacy of those who made sacrifices to fight for freedom.
